‘Mr. & Mrs. Mahi’: A Misfire in Both Sports and Relationship Drama

Director: Sharan Sharma

Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor, Kumud Mishra, Zarina Wahab, Rajesh Sharma

Run-time: 139 minutes

Sharan Sharma’s “Mr. & Mrs. Mahi” starts with promise but falters in execution, failing as both a sports film and a relationship drama. Rajkummar Rao stars as Mahendra, a cricket-obsessed man struggling to make it to the state team while his wife, Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor), is a doctor with hidden cricketing talents. The film begins with charming moments of the newlyweds bonding over cricket, but quickly shifts to darker tones as Mahendra’s jealousy and manipulativeness surface.

Rao convincingly portrays Mahendra’s frustration and inadequacy, but the film’s focus on his character’s redemption feels forced and underdeveloped. Mahima’s potential growth is sidelined, and the narrative becomes predictable, drawing heavily on clichés and lacking originality. The cricket scenes are as uninspired as the film’s recycled soundtrack choices, leaving little impact.

Despite Rao’s commendable performance, “Mr. & Mrs. Mahi” struggles to find its footing, resulting in a forgettable and uneven viewing experience.
